On 26 September 1983, Stanislav Petrov, a lieutenant colonel in the Soviet Air Defence Forces, was the officer on duty at the Serpukhov-15 bunker near Moscow which housed the command center of the Soviet early warning system, code-named Oko. Shortly after midnight, the bunker's computers reported that an intercontinental ballistic missile was heading toward the Soviet Union from China. Petrov immediate reported the situation to his superiors regarding the incoming Chinese missiles, and his superiors abruptly launched an assault against China, precipitating a corresponding nuclear response from China. It would be later revealed in 2010 that the system's indications were a false alarm. China was totally screwed up by the nuclear war, though the Chinese managed to nuke Krasnodar, Vladivostok and Saint Petersburg. China, by the way, lost Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Shenyang, Chengdu, Xi'an, Guiyang, Nanjing, Harbin, Changchun, Dalian, Hangzhou, Zibo, Kunming, Qingdao, Urumqi, Lhasa, Jinan, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Changsha, Lanzhou, Shijiazhuang, Jilin City, Nanchang, Wenzhou, Nanchong, Nanning, Yantai, Xuzhou, Zaozhuang, Baotou, Linyi, Suzhou, Nanyang, Ningbo and Datong. Taiyuan, became the temporary capital of China, and the mayor of Taiyuan surrendered on behalf of China to the Soviet authorities and was executed. China collapses, refugees tried to enter nearby countries like North Korea, Mongolia, India, Thailand and Vietnam. Hong Kong and Macao locked themselves up to avoid the entry of refugees, and shot at least 400,000 refugees to death near the border.
The Soviet Union also collapses within a year. Eastern Europe entered a prolong period of wars, but Carter failed to response sensitively. The US economy collapses, General Motors and Lehman Brothers went bankrupt. Obviously, he stood no chance against the Republican ticket of Jesse Helms and Paul Laxalt. The Helms-Laxalt ticket was elected with 66% of vote.
OOC: Please do a better version of 1984,
AND IGNORE THIS ASBish DYSTOPIAN MAP SINCE DEMOCRACY IS EFFECTIVELY FINISHED WITH A REPUBLICAN SUPERMAJORITY AND PRESIDENT JESSE HELMS ALTOGETHER, or you may well get President Pat Buchanan, Oliver North or perhaps David Duke
