[1] As stated in the Constitution of the Kingdom of North America, once a king dies, the House of Representatives would elect the new king, who is to serve until his death. However, once becoming King, Andrew I abolished the Constitution and ended the elected monarchy.
[2] In 1865, Andrew II proclaimed himself Emperor, and announced a series of sweeping reforms, including the abolition of slavery - but land reforms were too limited, and political reforms were too insincere. In 1883, he was assassinated by Robert Todd Lincoln, member of the illegal Socialist Revolutionary Party in Chicago.
[3] After a succession crisis, it was deemed the former marshal famous for his deeds in the West, was rightful heir through distant marriage of Thomas II's cousin's daughter's half-sister.

[1] After Kennedy's Social Monarchist Party wins in a landslide, he is appointed Emperor of North America, however what's new is that the Emperor is also supposed to appoint a Grand Duke who will serve as head of government and head up domestic affairs, while the Emperor remains to mostly handle foreign affairs and other duties and head of state. The Grand Duke serves for life.
