List of countries that could have gone Communist in 20th century

Alright, we´re gonna make a list (this is take 2, don´t mention any nazistuff;))

Add countries and make a point for it:

1. Iran. Communist/marxist movement had popularity in the 50s, although I think a likelier outcome without US/UK interference is a stable republic.
2. Finland. Losing the winterwar.

Add more as you like.

There was of course a rebellion in Germany after WWI, but how plausible is it that it leads to a communist state. I can´t imagine other European powers tolerating it.

Could Turkey go communist?

P.s.
Note that this could mean soviet style communism, or it could be a TL with no soviet union, or a pre soviet union revolution leading to communist state. But plausibly of course. F.x. USA going communist however popular is not possible I think with a post 1900 POD.

Adding to Fabilius' plea for no Goodwinning may I suggest Chile. Allende was a Socialist with strong support and links to the Chilean Communist Party.

Italy could have gone Communist in the Twenties, before Mussolini set up the Fascist Party. There was great instability, and asccording to what I remember reading the government was more or less powerless.

Hmmm... I think Allende probably wasn´t heading for a complete communist state, well he was nationalising but I don´t think he was un-democratic. Probably more so than Chavez f.x. But I can imagine Chile going communist in the 20th century in some scenarios, maybe if the coup is somehow botched.

1. Iran
2. Finland
3. Chile
4. Spain (I think Spain could´ve ended up communist).
5. Italy, (yeah)
6. Germany (Germany is a big chunk right in the center of Europe. Spain, Italy and Germany I think would all see some interference from UK and France... They won´t sit idly by I´d say.)
7. Korea (entirely)
8.Malaysia

So could India have gone communist?
What about the other latin american countries.

Isolated states in India are essentially communist now, specifically Kerala.

There was also the possibility of it going Red after WWII, with the U.S. pulling strings to prevent it.

(Per philo-Soviet William Blum, the U.S. had Italian expatriates write home warning of remittances being cut off, among other things.)

In theory yes, Japan could end up communist if the soviet union invaded instead of US although it would be a little difficult to pull off.

Italy has been mentioned, the one thing about the European countries that irks me though is the way the other countries might react. I would imagine that if a 1920s Italy went communist, Britain and France would support the whites in a civil war. Post WW2 might be doable though.

Algeria, don´t know enough to comment

Israel? I know it was very left leaning when founded.

Did Brazil have a strong marxist movement?

Sure, Iran could have gone communist, but how likely is it that it would have? Though Mexico had socialist leanings, Mexican marxists in the 1970s never really got off the ground, in part due to government and vigilante violence and also due to simple lack of popular support.

Communist chances are far better in Peru and Columbia.

Algeria, don´t know enough to comment
Their independence movement was secular left, but I think full blown Marxism in an Islamic society is very unlikely (except as part of a whole ie former Russian empire)

Depends on what is meant by 'communist'. Stalinism, Maoism, Brehnezism, Marxist, Leninist, Socialist, Syndicalist, Anarchist, what?
A list of countries dominated by the USSR is one set.
A list of countries that have their own 'communist' revolution is another.
A list of countries that could have been are more left-wing than OTL includes every country on the planet.
