L'Internationale

What are some ways Spanish Republican Internationalism could thrive and spread? If the Republicans won the Civil War, could their ideological influence be felt in the right/left polarized post-war environments of nations like France and Italy or would they be crushed along with the actual communists by stay-behind groups and the general boot-heel of militant anti-communism (which was way more popular before and after the war than militant anti-fascism ever was, as far as the Western Powers go)?

Internationale propaganda certainly depicts an interesting view of the future, one perhaps more belonging to a retro-futurism counter-factual than a historical alt-history timeline, but the possibilities even under the constraints of prosaic reality still entice the imagination.

If nothing else, a victorious Spanish Republic means that Spain would have an influx of volunteers gaining citizenship and those volunteers that return home will probably have a measurable impact on their homelands. And OTL Cold War fascism organizations like the Paladin Group will be butterflied into weaker situations while OTL Cold War anarchist/situationalist/syndicalist movements and perhaps Third Way communism in general and maybe even the Fourth International might benefit.

Could a person in an ATL 1960's America with the POD being a Spanish Republican victory in the 40's be convinced to distinguish between anarchists and communists? Heck, could "Right Communist" peasant organizations and "Left Communist" Trotskyist types be made to lay down together even if it were in green pastures? And that's not even facturing in the anarchists and regular liberal democracy types.

If this is too early and too localized a change to effect the Vietnam War, wouldn't the presence of an anarcho-haven Spain touch into the American radical left countercultural movement?

I can imagine that if this Spain did survive during the rigors of the Cold War, from the get go it would be a thorn in the side of both NATO and the USSR, on a pure ideological level.

I, and I have only read two books on the Spanish civil war, get the impression that the republics supporters where quite a diverse bunch when it come to ideology. That is, I don't think it's possible to talk about a ideology in particular. And it's possibly for the best in a republic win TL given that stalinists appeared to be the strongest supporters of democracy.

All that aside, if a Republic is established in Spain, that would be a clear defeat for Nazis and their allies. As a result, once France falls, the Nazis may set their eyes on Spain. However, Republican forces, along with French soldiers who escaped there (and perhaps British soldiers sent to reinforce Spain?) would be ready and waiting to take on the Nazis. (The Blue Division would be fighting alongside the Nazis, though.) In addition, a Spanish Republic would likely be on good terms with the Soviet Union, which could result in a second front far sooner than in OTL.
