Crazy old Nazi she most certainly was, but it's still fascinating to listen to Hanna Reitsch when she talks flying machines.

Scary stuff. Why not use a helicopter?

Good question - I don't know. I had seen other video's about modern planes landing on Papua NG ridge tops - It seems to be a fairly common event and every one of them also seems to be a very hairy experience.

Could it be a range issue?

Could be range - no idea on starting point for any of the flights. I've seen references to crossing some 11,000'+ mountain ranges with wifty weather coming into play as well for some of these flights. Payload cost per flight maybe?

Hot and high are always a problem with aviation, but aircraft are more reliable than helicopters. I think more likely it is payload and range over choppers though.

A highly informative FAA training film about carrier operations. Excellent insights into the equipment and organisation. Aside from everything else, the first Seafire landing on a carrier is something to savour. It really is a peach of a landing too. Could it have been Eric Brown at the controls?

A fascinating interview with the late Eric Brown, mixed in with equally fascinating footage of the early Me262 prototypes. In a roundabout way he pretty much sums up my view that the 262 was the better airframe, but the Welland and its descendents were far more practicle engines for service. The single most important characteristic for any weapon or weapons system is reliability. Without that it's just a lot of expensive scrap.
