Lindbergh in 1940! (But forget Philip Roth).

The staring point is the premise of Philip Roth's novels "The plot aganist America",that is based on Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.'s autobiography, in which Schlesinger makes a comment that some of the more radical Republican senators of the day wanted Lindbergh to run against Roosevelt.
So,we said that in 1940 Charles Lindbergh become the Republican candidate for the Presidency, win the primary and in November defeats FDR.
The "Lone Eagle is the new President of United States.
Forget the Roth story about baby Lindbergh kidnapped by Hitler, and the nazi blackmail to the President
What might happen realistically?

Offhand . . .Isolationism was a Northeast-Midwest thing. The south, for example, was thoroughly Democratic then.

So, let's give Lindy all of Wilkie's states, and add to them the Northeast and Midwest: say Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois.

That makes it

Roosevelt/Wallace (D) 282
Lindbergh/whoever (R) 249

Miserable little Phil Roth and his rotten family can stay in Noo Yawk and not get the Federal Fresh Air Fund trips to Danville, Ky.

But Lindy can be an atypical Republican popular type of all American hero, like Eisenhower in 1950s OTL?
And if campaign is not about "isolationism",but about "keep America, and your sons, out of the war"?
I think that could be popular everywhere, not only in midwest.

I think this would be an interesting TL and I would expect that a Lindberg Presidency would focus on military preparedness and creating the so called Fortress America, where American economic and military strength deter threats
