Lincoln Lived?

With if on April 15 1865 the pistol used by John Wilkes Booth misfires, and Lincoln lives. What kind of Butterflies might this have on Reconstruction? Would the US buy the Dominican Republic? What other effects might Lincoln living have on the Reconstruction era?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but how would this get the US to buy the Dominican Republic? Was this something Lincoln wanted?

Maybe Lincoln would serve a third term? In an attempt to continue reconstruction?

There was a proposal during the Grant administration to bring the Dominican Republic into the United States as a state or territory (can't remember which) because it had floundered as an independent state. This was years after Lincoln's day, though, and it wasn't a purchase given there's no one to purchase them from since it was an independent nation.

That's always been brought up in these threads, but it's a pipe dream. The two term tradition stands and there's no reason for Lincoln to break it. He wanted to go west and go see the Holy Land. The business of Reconstruction can be handled in his second term, and then any other matters for the United States handed to whoever succeeded him.

Interesting. Never knew that.

True. I forgot about his want to go travel.

I presume this is in a particular order and that you are not implying a Mormon Lincoln?

Forget the Dominican Republic, would we still buy Alaska. I am sure Lincoln would support Seward in that but how much influence would Lincoln still have by 1867. I think he would have been headed for an out and out war with the Stevens/Wade wing of the Republican party with unpredictable results. I am not necessarily implying he would have faced impeachment, but depending on the results of the 1866 elections (and how many if any ex-rebel states would be participating) he could have been either empowered or politically emasculated. Although a tragedy, his assassination at precisely that time was the best possible event to ensure his historical legacy. These are Mothra-sized butterflies being released and I do not want to start waving nets at them.
