Lincoln killed at the Battle of Fort Stevens, 1864

So, whilst watching some old episodes of Crash Course, US history, John Green mentions that the guy standing next to Lincoln whilst he was observing the battle got shot. Apparently, wiki confirms this.

So, let's say Lincoln does get shot and killed by the Confederates. What is the short and medium term outcome of this ?

One thing I'm curious about is how the Union would see it.
Did the Confederates willingly shot Lincoln? Or was it an accident thanks to the President being too careless, standing like that on the fort?

alternate history short story

A long while back, I read an alternate history short story that actually talked about that very event. It was in one of those books that had a collection of different alternate history stories. In this story, Lincoln's Vice President Hamlin, would turn Lincoln into a martyr, and exact a terrible revenge on the confederacy, that for the next 80 years the south would be under military occupation, through both world wars, and their would be so much bloodshed.

Did it also have the Nazis smuggling arms to the neo-Confederates in New Orleans, and a government agent trying to stop it? Because that is HT's "Must and Shall".
