How can Lincoln get back the states without war?
EDIT: This is going nowhere I thought it would go. Does anyone know how to close the thread?

The Southern states lose nerve and don't make an overt attack. The next eight years are a mishmash of passive aggression, legal doublethink, and dubious proclamations ending in the would-be Confederacy quietly withdrawing its declarations of independence and agreeing to act as though the entire thing never happened.

Not going to work, without military action the upper South would at the very least turn into Bloody Kansas / Wartime Missouri Writ Large. Once the South took the jump there was no turning back and everyone knew it. The South couldn't afford to back down, especially with all the changes that would come once they were out of the Senate, and no American President could survive in office by doing nothing.
