Liberal German State before the 1800's?

So the Swedes did a bit of damage on their way out. It's not like people were really using that half of the country anyway.

One of the charming bits of Wedgwood (that cuts against what I quoted in my first post) are all these passages where Gustavus II Adolphus goes on at great length about how this isn't really about him, how dare these libellers say he's only in Germany only for his own ambitions, won't someone think of the poor Protestant babies, etc., and then one night at table he just lets slip the words "so when I am emperor..." or something to that effect.

One can just imagine how that particular roomful of German nobles took that little bit of news.

Gustav Adolf? *twitches*
As a good figure for Germany? *twitch twitch*
ARGH, GIMME THAT DEATH RAY, NEK!

;)

I resent you painting Roman Catholicism as a "voodoo cult". Now Lutheranism on the other hand...

That said, I have doubly no love for Gustav II. Adolf (does anybody honestly believe that France would NOT start fighting him as soon as he won?), so an alliance of convenience seems logical.

Catholicism is much more voodoo, what with wacky rituals and ritual cannabalism ;)
Yes, an alliance of convinience indeed. Mind, by the 17th century Catholicism would be best for Germany. In the 16th century, a Lutheran National Church wouldve been best, but that train had left - but there must be religious unity, so onwards, Habsburg! ;)

:D :D :D
Still, a Lutheran National Church wouldve been cool. Hm, offing Charles (early enough), replacing him with Ferdinand? Maybe...

Or Schmalkaldic Victory, and kicking out all habsburg. Works, too. Because, obviously House Hesse is even awesomer than House Habsburg :p And teh Wettins somewhat, at least...

And now, Susano, you're just goading me. The Elector John Frederick is the greatest prince ever to be rolled end-over-end away from the table after a five hour meal to deliver a pompous denunciation of Charles V, and you know it. :)

And I'm not taking any trash-talk about Frederick of the Palatinate and his Stuart queen, either. They were awesome! Him? Not that bright, but they were still awesome.
