LBJ loses 1948 Senate race.

In 1948 LBJ ran in a very tough race for the US Senate in Texas. He ran against a very popular Governor Coke Stevenson. Both sides pulled dirty tricks to get the Democratic party nomination. Which meant at that time you would be the winner of the November election. LBJ won and the rest is history. Stevenson became a Dixie crat and eventually fore shadows the rise of the GOP in the south. So what are some consquences of LBJ losing? Short term? Long term?

Coke Stevenson was never a Republican: you're confusing him with Allan Shivers and his Shivercrats.

Short-term consequences: LBJ never enters the Senate or becomes President. Either Speaker of the House when Rayburn dies or running for governor at some point. Given the weakness of the TX governor's executive power, the former is more likely.

Long-term: assuming no butterflies, Nixon wins in 1960.

I never said he was Republican. After he lost the 1948 race he did support many republicans according to Caro. Like I said in my previous post he was the first of the so called dixiecrats who eventually led to the South and Texas becoming a GOP dominated region and state. But he died a democrat in 1975. I like your idea on the Speaker of the House being the new goal of LBJ?
