Last Chance to Avert the 1974 Coup in Ethiopia?

Not an expert, but maybe Haile Selassie decides not to dissolve federation with Eritrea? And passes away earlier? No idea what would happen afterwards, I expect you'd still get a strong chance of a coup.

Me neither, maybe having him bite the dust earlier could do the trick, since his son (from what I heard) seemed more capable of turning things around than he was.

Not dissolving the confederation with Eritrea could help. But ultimately he had to go, there was going to be severe turmoil with how long he had been in power and his iron grip. Sooner better than later.

Maybe have the 1960 coup succeed instead. Of course there is no way to know that coup would have lead to anything bettet than the ´74 coup. And the 1960 coup of course had the major disadvantage of being really badly planned.

What if the forward thinking members in the army, overt famine, and raise salaries? They get to HIM and give him the straight dope.
HS is a smart man, He will do the right thing.
