Large scale chemical weapons in colonial wars Post world war 2

Could Large scale chemical weapons in the various colonial wars post world war 2 be possible

What would be the impact of This

Would this lead to chemical weapons use as standard part of modern warfare

The only thing weapons of mass destruction have is unilaterality.

As soon as the other side is able to retaliate (and the Soviets would have a hand in that), most of the advantage is gone.

General ugliness apart, I see it possible during the interbellum and probably only in Africa.

Otherwise we're going to need an earlier PoD, removing their use from WW1 and somehow also from WW2, otherwise the horrors soldiers experienced are going to scare any player cynical enough to attempt it.

Certainly. Gas is generally an excellent weapon for such wars as the insurgents/freedom fighters have little ability to protect themselves or retaliate in kind. Very useful against insurgents hiding in rough terrain.

If pepper spray/Mace or something similar was invented in the 1940's I can absolutely see it being used widely by colonial governments attempting to keep control. And its generally non-lethal nature means its the "humanitarian" option which means there's not going to be a lot of push back against just dousing towns or neighborhoods with hundreds of tons of it as a means of control. Instead of agent orange it's clouds of pepper spray.

So, do we keep Fritz Haber's contribution?
If so, we need to do away with the bulk of the massacres in WW2 so that mass murder remains seen as a viable method of warfare, at least far from home.

Colonial empires come stronger out of the war and perhaps the UN is not formed at all. As you may recall, TTL LoN was somewhat reluctant in sanctioning the use of gas against Ethiopia, so perhaps it will happen again.

What's the use case though? Last resort against widespread rebellions or something more systematic? It's hard to imagine France and Britain doing the latter, though (and even less the Netherlands and Portugal).

I hadn't thought of that. I must say it's a far more likely path.
