Land of Salmon and Totems

Interesting TL :) Wonder though, that the PoD of this would may make some butterflies in the south of Oregon.....

Well we are seeing a interesting flow of agriculture toward the Sacremento Valley buuuuut following events in the next two to three hundred years are going to nip the bud on development somewhat.

I like it. A very original idea. Most viable Native Startes seem to be either Tecumseh's Confeseration or one of the Empires. In fact I do not think I have ever seen a TL based in the American Northwest.

So I would love to see where this goes.

thanks for reminding me. Well probably this weekend. I am going to try to get writing done for abunch of writing projects but I hope to do something good for this one here.

The Dominion of the Totem

For the last fifty years since 1400 AD the Pacific NorthWest has seen gradual shifts and changes, at the head of these being the Totem Confederation-the position of Chieftian held by the Haida, and as such the Totem Confederation had-at least in its own region become very aggressive toward absorbing the loyalties of surrounding tribes in another time would be known as the Southern British Columbia and of the Olympia Peninsula of Washington state, with this they are more then able to extend their raids further and further south as well defend themselves against reprisals from their cheif enemies the Chinook. Who managed to keep the Haida and their allies from ever reachin far into the Columbia River basin and the Williamette Valley.

Over this time the social hierarchy system of the tribes have envolved as well, continuing o revolve around the exchange of goods which range from food, to wood tools, to slave people but hs shifted the Haida into a position of power as they have solidified their hold into a niche of power and command in the Totem Confederation. Not unlike the caste system of India, where the Haida form the leaders and go-getters of the goods so needed to their society, with the Tsimshian forming members of a artisian class which held equality to the farming and gathering members of the Tlingit tribes. The Haida leaders, being the least numerous of the peoples, played the two off each other well to preserve their own position of power in the Confederation. The lowest rung of society were either members of foreign tribes or those who did nothing, this coming from thee still intense period of the Little Ice Age. As such many of the tribes people were moved to Vancouver Island, with only a few families still remaining in their home territories.

Though by the year 1450,things in the Wiliamete Valley had changed, following the leadership of "He-Who-Rises-At-Dawn" of the Chinook. Rising Dawn, became a prominnt leader amongst the Chinook trading confederation who in 1443 invaded the north of the Williamette, submitting the Tulutain people to the Chinook, ending a long period of tension bewteen the two. After this though Rising Dawn turneed his eyes southward to the lower cities of th Williamette, and like men such as Alexander the Great or Ramses of Egypt, plotted domination of all that his people knew.

Only, Rising Dawn did not count on "He-Who-Talks-With-Raven" or Talking Raven who by 1450 was the leader of the Haida, therego leader of the Totem Confederation. Sending spies into the Chinook river and gathering information, Talking Raven discovered the plans of the Chinook to extend themselves southward, that is to over extend themselves outward. So Talking Raven secretly gathered his warriors and those from all the Totem Confederations and carried on buiesness of raiding the Chinook as normal, not bretraying any hint of knowing what Rising Dawn planned, and so in early May when Talking Ravens spies brought news of Rising Dawn's warriors spearheading down the WIlliamette, Takin Raven acted.

Instead of a normal raiding force, the villages and stationed warriors along the mouth of the Columbia were hit by a full-flung invasion force of thousands of warriors from the Totem Confederation and their allies. Leading the assault himself, and using knowledge gained by his spies mapping out the Columbia, Talking Raven guided his invasion and overran the Chinook even before word spread to Rising Dawn! In panic, Rising Dawn pulled back his raiding parties and would meet the forces of the Totem Confederation at OTL Portland in the Battle of the Rivers which would see the defeat of Rising Dawn after his forces exhausted themselves trying to break Haida Forts constructed at the confluence of the Williamette.

Utterly victorious, Talking Raven would absorb not only the Chinook but also the Williamnette as as the cities previously under the Chinook's influence came under his, and not long afterafter threatening the remaining free cities of the Williamnette they too would pledge themselves to Talking Raven-extending the reach of the Totem Confderation, more so the Haida, over the lives of over a million people. Amongst the Cheif-Kings of the Haida, Talking Raven is considered the cheif founder of the Kingdom of the Haida.

I know it's been six months, but this thread needs bumping. It should not die, even if the title is a copy of mine. :p (don't mention the fact my title is a slight copy...)

I have a feeling We're gonna get some violence with the Haida Kingdom and white settlers.:D

I hope to see more of this original and brilliant Idea.

So much going on right now, I am looking forward to redoing this TL but I have to wait a while. FIRST I have to get back to the US from China were the internet sources I use will work and I can use my library for research.

No worries its not dead. Just sleeping.

"The Historical, Social and Religious Findings Amongst the Haida People [1]"

"He history of our people is a long one, pale one. It is steeped in hardship, bravery, courage, and trickery as these are all traits we have become over our many, many years. You would be well and wise to listen to what I have to say and take heed of our people. For I am of the Haida, and our people are sons of Xhuuya or as you say,
Raven! Others may disagree with me…some of our old ways find my opinions…enthusiastic while others of these new ways who love your Christ just condemn me outright! Humph. They have no subtlety.
-
What? Speak up I can’t-? Oh, you wish to know why I think my people are sons of Raven do you? Come here let me ask something of you…closer…closer…HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN HERE? Sit back down, I bet you did not think a old man could speak so loud…hehe…
-
My point stands still. Our people live the life of the Raven, between in this world Ta’xet and Tia, violent death and peaceful death, [3] the Raven is a constant chaotic thing in this world! Look at our proud history. First our people lived solely on the Haida Gwaii, our beloved islands to the north. I still have wounds that hurt from when the Russian-folk attempted to claim them. Eventually through either by Sin [4] or even the Raven our simple and constant existence on Haida Gwaii ended with the "Dieing Times", so much so our people were forced from our lands and to the south and from there we have struck at all foes and conquered a great kingdom!
-
Through chaotic times we have been poked and prodded to react and to change, Raven has not made anything himself but has from releasing humanity to giving us the sun and salmon through trickery and bargaining. Just as we have done! We have made little but followed the example of Raven to live a good life, by trade, bargaining and conquering of others. The People that lived here before our arrival they were strange and divided fighting amongst one another and then my ancestors swept through the Valley and brought it all under one! Talking Raven in my opinion was indeed the Raven, through honoring the Raven by emulating his actions we have achieved our greatest triumph."
-
"…after all, when Seagull stole the light of the world and hid it inside a box, did not the world cry out to Raven to get Seagull to release the light? Then did not Raven use every trick and flattery in his head to get Seagull to release the light but when all this failed did not Raven strike at Seagull with a thorn and get him to release all the good that is light? All Chiefs who live by this will see the Haida live well and strong against all friends and foes…be flattering and speak nice words but when this fails strike out with the greatest of force!"

"[1] It should be noted that while it was commonly held a century or so ago by people of Reiherst’s time that the Pacific North West Natives were all one people of the Haida Nation. Anthropology and study has since revealed that the Haida just existed at the top level of their social hierarchy which below consisted of several different tribes. Though do not forget the Haida have also absorbed several other tribes into their identity over the years..
[2] This recounts Reinherst’s conversation with a old Shaman amongst the Haida. Unfortunately his name is unknown, as Reinherst has just referred to him as the ‘Shaman Son Of The Devil’ but this can be inferred to be THE Shaman Ktunaxa. The somewhat extensive conversation gives light on the soon to be attitudes of many Haida to the changing world around them.
[3] Duality in base it has evolved into a notion of life and one’s attitudes toward death.
[4] Chief Deity and Sky God of the Haida"

Just a little tidbit to keep the faith. Though I will not be posting anymore for my Tls, this being my final week in China and I have to get to other non-AH related fictional work which I really want to do. Though when I come back I will have a surprise for all whoa re interested in ALL my Tls….
