Lancaster England with a Spanish Twist

From: The History of Castile
By Professor Orwell King’s College

The Treaty of the Bulls of Guisando struck between half brother and half sister was unsatisfactory for either party. Yet, it averted certain Civil War between King Enrique and Princess Isabella. King Enrique wisely saw that is chances of winning a Civil War against his sister when much of his nobility was against him was unlikely. This is why Isabella became his heir and Enrique’s own daughter Juana was disowned but eventually married to Francis Duke of Navarre. Many feared that Isabella would break the only part of the deal King Enrique was able to force on her during the treaty, which was his choice of her future husband. Enrique discovered a plot by some Castilian nobles in 1469 to sneak Isabella to Aragon to marry Ferdinand of Aragon. This plot failed and almost cost Isabella her crown. Isabella remained unmarried until 1471, when Enrique fearing a noble revolt lead by Isabella married her off to Prince-Regent Edward of Lancaster. King Enrique felt that England would never recover fast enough to aid his Isabella against his daughter. Isabella leaving Castile for England would cause some noble to switch their support to Duke Francis and Duchess Juana because of their closer proximity to Castile.

The Lancaster cause during the winter of 1468 was quite bleak. Henry VI was sitting in the Tower of London under the control of the usurper Edward IV. Lancaster rebellions were being crushed throughout England and many Englishmen viewed Edward IV or Yorkist as the best shot at ending the War of the Roses and restore peace. Queen Margaret and Edward of Lancaster were forced into exile in France living upon Margaret’s family. However the fortunes for the Lancaster cause changed quickly as Edward son alienated Noble and Peasant alike with heavy taxes, in fact most of the taxes were spent rebuilding England rather that maintaining his army as many nobles felt. The Woodville family also served to make many noble families to switch support from York to Lancaster. It wasn’t until Earl Warwick attempted to marry his oldest daughter to Duke Clarence and was rejected by King Edward of York that Warwick began to plot the fall of York. Warwick then attempted to start a revolt and defeat Edward of York, Warwick was successful until Richard, Edward’s brother, arrived and defeated Warwick. Edward is able to keep his throne because of the support of John Neville’s, Earl Warwick’s brother. John Neville had been rewarded for driving out the Lancastrians in Northern England with the title of Earl of Northumberland. The Percy family had long held this title, but they had been in disgrace. However, when Henry Percy was rehabilitated John was forced to give up the earldom and many important offices in favor of his former foe. This led to John plotting with his brother against Edward of York.

1468: Treaty of the Bulls of Guisando is signed between King Enrique and Isabella, making her heir to Castilian throne over her supposed niece Juana. England is mostly quite as Edward of York has defeated much of what remains of Lancaster resistance in England.
Henry VI of England remains under the control of Edward of York in the Tower of London, causing many Lancaster would be revolts to stop in fear that Edward would kill him.
1469: Castilian Nobles attempt to sneak Isabella out of Spain to meet Ferdinand of Aragon. Isabella refuses to break the agreement between her and Enrique. King Enrique quickly finds out and has most of the Nobles executed. In England, Warwick begins his rebellion against Edward of York. I'll look forward for this. I have always found the idea of an Isabel and Edward marriage intriguing.

Incidentally, it was Ferdinand the one sneaked into Castille (NOT Spain, which as a sinonym of the Iberian peninsula until Castilla and Aragon united and took the name, to the anger on Portugal, wich also felt it had a right to it)

Ya now the problem is figuring a way to end the War of the Roses without killing every single Yorkist Claimant to the Throne. Then were going to have the War of Castilian Sucession between Portugal,Aragon, Castile Navarre, and possible English Army supported by France:D. Also, I am thinking of making the OTL Henry VI, Edward of Lancaster's main advisor and friend any problems with this.
