The Independence of the nation has been a long lasting argument, however, the most likely area in which the Kurds could have fully gained independence is in Iraq, and they already have some autonomy in their region.
On top of that, When would be the most likely time?
here are some possible points in time where we could split off from OTL and into the ATL
1932- british turning saudi arabia and iraq into dominions, chances of them accepting a Kurdish state??
1958- In the collapse of the Arab Federation (Jordan-Iraq union in response to UAR), the Kurds could have attempted to develop a state, while at the same time they could have attempted to aid the Revolution in return for autonomy
1988- Out of the ruins of the Iraq-Iran war, chances of a treaty being formed? created a Kurdish state, in both or either Iranian-Iraqi Kurdish land???
1990-1991- Kurds make a deal with the US to get a state by aiding the US in the gulf war
2003-2011- The Kurds could have made the same deal
2011-2017- Either the Kurds could become an unrecognized state and break off from Iraq like how Isis claimed lands in Iraq, OR by this point in time the Kurdish region of Iraq already has its own president, level of autonomy, and military divisions, it is likely they could declare independence.
Personally, I think that the Kurds could have either managed to gain a high level of autonomy in either 1932 or 1958, and then from that point on, declared independence in 1988, however I doubt that they would be supported by the US, or declare independence in 1991. They may have a better chance of being US-backed in 1991. Unfortunately, Bush Sr. did not care that much for the Kurds in Iraq, he led many of them in to fight Hussein, but then abandoned them, it is likely that Bush may make a false promise to the Kurds and fail to aid them in their efforts.
