Let's replace HMAS Sydney with the Greek cruiser G. Averoff.
This would bring up some significant tactical differences....
1) Relative speeds. Kormoran could do 18, Averoff about 20 knots. Assuming Averoff pursues, she has lots of time to think things through while the range closes at 2 knots an hour.
2) No aircraft, Averoff doesn't have the option to send an aircraft to investigate (as Sydney should have!)
3) Torpedo protection. Edwardian warships were notoriously vulnerably to underwater damage
4) Armour. Nothing on Kormoran can penetrate Averoff's main gun turrets or belt. CO or #2 executive officer(s) should survive in the armored conning tower.
5) Combat training and experience. Once bounced, Sydney's crew fought well. How was Averoff's crew?
