Korean war prevented or Postponed, Truman reelected?

As I understand it Stalin gave the nod for the North Korean invasion. If he had an attack of sanity and decided it was too big of a risk would how much would that have change American Politics

Would it have allowed Truman to run and win or would people have blamed him for the 'loss' of China and Stalin getting the bomb

My impression is that in 1952 the US economy was not going so bad.

Oh and would that have reduced British rearmament costs and have knock on effect in British politics

A lot of the second period of the '45 Labour government (47-50) was dominated by reduced spending because of foreign commitments, including Korea. Bevan famously resigned over it. Without Korea, further expenditure and, perhaps, nationalisation may have been on the cards.

I could see Truman being reelected if Korean War was postponed. I could see that Robert Taft will be the nominee for the Republican Party and being defeated badly by Truman in 1952.

Truman cannot win a second term if China goes Communist, period. Even if Jiang wins the CCW and Korea doesn't happen Truman never wanted a second term and Bess was implacably opposed to it. Would he curbstomp Taft or any Republican not named Ike? Undoubtedly. Would he run? No. Truman would be 72 in 1956, the oldest President to serve till that time, even if he was in very robust health, unlike his septuagenarian successors Eisenhower, Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

The Korean war was pretty much a North Korean conception and adventure. Stalin gave the nod the same way as a teacher gives the nod to a student who wants to go to the bathroom. It was of no significance to him.

If he had said no I think the war would still have happened and Stalin would have sighed and then backed North Korea anyway.

The effect of the war was to lift the post war slump in America. The economy of the US was in the doldrums with output below 1945 levels. The UK had been forced to devalue it's currency in 1949.

The Korean war boosted the US economy and created a boom in the West. It also helped to get the Japanese economy moving.

No Korean war and Truman may lose because of

1. China had gone Communist.

2. High Unemployment and a faltering economy.

3. Boredom after two decades of Democrat rule.
