Korea, Viking Style

Faraday Cage

Would it be plausible for the advanced navy of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea to lead to a Viking style naval expansion through the Pacific and Indian Oceans, or would Portuguese and Dutch ships block these expansions?

I don't really know that much about Korean history, but if you mean raiding and eventually settling like the Vikings would the Wokou be a better choice?

Does Korea have population pressures and expansionism of, say Japan?

I was under the impression that they never really did.

I suspect it's too late for that. If Korea at that point decides to go a-viking, or project sea power in any other way, China will put a stop to it. The Portuguese and Dutch don't really matter very much in this scenario. that would be doubly true if the upshot is that Japan 8which would doubtlessly be at the receiving end) does not go into its orwn maritime isolation. Neither the Japanese nor the Chinese had particularly impressive warships, but they were competent shipwrights with experience on the high seas. If they stay active, the Europeans will have a much harder time.

If you want a really hefty Viking Korea, go for it a thousand years earlier. Japan is still wide open and the Chinese are busy elsewhere.

Yeah but that's before they have those neat turtle ships...

Anyways, thanks for the advice.

Not Vikings, that would be too barbaric for civilized Joseon. But naval expansion certainly possible, the Turtle Ships would be the most advanced ships in the field of armour until the ironclads of the American Civil War. The only problem is that Korea was too isolationist in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries for such imperialist expansion.

With Ming resp. Qing china on its northern flank and Tokugawa Japan on its shores, I would hardly consider isolationism it's *only* problem.

I must agree, the turtle ships were extremely advanced for their time.

The issue you need to deal with is the Kings of Korea who tended to bump off any underling who got too powerful or did too well. As soon as a subject starts to excel as a 'viking', the King will have it in for them.
