Rehe Campaign

  • B - Japanese troops invade Rehe Province (25 Feb 1933)
  • C - Japanese troops attack the Great Wall (11 Mar 1933)
  • D - Northeast Army/Fengtian Clique is dissolved by Chiang Kai-Shek after the loss of almost all of its territorial possessions (12 Mar 1933)
  • E - Khotan Emirate proclaimed (16 Mar 1933)

Tangku Truce

  • A - Japanese breach the Great Wall (20 Mar 1933)
  • B - Fourth Encirclement Campaign ends in a Communist victory; however the Nationalists achieve more success than in previous campaigns (22 Mar 1933)
  • C - Manchukuo and Shansi assert their interests in Chahar and Hebei (Apr 1933)
  • D - Sheng Shicai overthrows the provincial government in Sinkiang (14 Apr 1933)
  • E - The Chahar People’s Anti-Japanese Army, a successor to the Kuominchun, is formed to combat Japanese advances (26 May 1933)
  • F - Nationalists and Japan sign the Tangku Truce. A demarcation line is defined in the contested territory. China also extends de facto recognition to Manchukuo (31 May 1933)

Foreign Support:

These maps show financial, military, and political support given by great powers to entities within China. The supported entities are usually not satellite or puppet states, but rather benefit from an informal alliance with their supporter.

  • C - Republic of China 36th Division takes over the Tarim Basin (Jul 1933)
  • D - Tibetan Army retreats to the Jinsha river, and signs a truce with Chinese forces (Aug 1933)
Fifth Encirclement Campaign Begins:

  • D - Kuominchun dissolves itself. Chahar returns to Kuomintang rule (1 Oct 1933)

I can feel the War of Resistance creeping up on me. That's going to be really tough to do, although the idea for these maps actually started with my frustration at the lack of useful visual resources for the Sino-Japanese War.

Soviet Intervention in Sinkiang

  • A - 36th Division attacks Urumqi, the capital of Sinkiang (Dec 1933)
  • B - Soviets invade Sinkiang to prevent the destruction of Sheng Shicai’s provincial government by the 36th Division. At the same time the East Turkestan Republic captures most of southern Sinkiang including Kashgar (24 Jan 1934)
  • C - 36th Division retakes Kashgar (6 February 1934)
  • D - Chiang Kai-Shek backs the establishment of a Mongol Political Committee in Chahar to begin the process of giving Inner Mongolia autonomy (Mar 1934)

Long March Begins

  • A - 36th Division recaptures Yarkand (Apr 1934)
  • B - East Turkestan Republic destroyed. The 36th Division reestablishes itself in the Tunganistan region of southern Sinkiang (Jul 1934)
  • C - The Fifth Encirclement Campaign ends with the destruction of the Kiangsi Soviet Area. The remnants of the Chinese Red Army begin the Long March across southwestern China in search of refuge (10 Oct 1934)

  • A - Japanese government announces a policy of non-non-aggression towards China. However, the Army does not renounce its aggressive policies (22 Jan 1935)
  • B - Kuomintang military expedition overthrows the uncooperating governor of Kweichow during its pursuit of the Communists (May 1935)
  • C - The Japanese Army tries to stage an international incident with the aim of acquiring a pretext for further expansion into China (29 May 1935)
  • D - Chiang Kai-Shek agrees to sign an agreement with Japan demilitarizing Hebei and allowing Japanese influence in the region (10 June 1935)

Retrenchment in Shensi

  • A - Communists attempt to establish themselves in Kansu but the attempt is defeated by the Ma, and the Communists have to continue onwards (Sept 1935)
  • B - The Long March ends with Communists reestablishing themselves in northern Shensi (22 October 1935)
  • C - Japan occupies Chahar (24 Dec 1935)
