The Nullification Crisis of 1832-1833 involved South Carolina threatening to secede over the implementation of tariffs. Jackson clearly was not pleased.
Let's say Jackson marches in, burns down the state, and puts down the rebellion. Secession as an idea in the US is forever tainted.
What now?
There'd be two other big issues at play.
1) There'd be a lot of slaves running off the plantations if the whole state is burning down
2) The Texas annexation (and prospect of war with Mexico) will be a bit testier if the US just had a war within its borders.
