Suppose that Franz Joseph died early before the Bosnia crisis

His successor, Franz Ferdinand, did not want to annex Bosnia, and instead of returning it to the Ottomans or giving it to the Serbs, he created a new kingdom in the name of the Kingdom of Bosnia

(The kingdom also includes Ayala Sanjak, which was under Austrian occupation)

Who will be her king and how things will develop onwards

I read, but IMHO I don't find it plausible. Bosnia was an Austro-Hungarian joint venture, good for the Empire after the losses in Italy and Germany. So not on board with giving it up so easily....

In fact, there was opposition within Austria to the annexation of Bosnia, including Franz Ferdinand

Even Hungary opposed the annexation because they did not want more Slavs

So with Franz Ferdinand as Emperor he created the Kingdom of Bosnia with independent king

Presumably, if not himself, then one of his male Habsburg cousins. FF may even give it to his oldest son given that they could not inherit the (A-H) Habsburg throne. There's no way its going to an outside party and risking the chance it leaves the Austrian orbit.

In fact, an independent Bosnia with an independent king will inevitably resort to the protection of Austria because Serbia Karadovic have plans on Bosnia and this means an existential threat to Bosnia, which forces the Bosnian king to Austrian protection

Therefore, I have no fear of their exit from Austria's influence as long as Serbia threatens them to a great extent

I think that the King of Bosnia will follow the pattern of his choice, similar to Albania

(A Protestant European nobleman or happened to have the lineage of the ancient kings of Bosnia and does not belong to one of the religions or races of the Bosnian state, and most importantly, he has distinguished relations with other European families)

This effectively excludes the Habsburgs, the Savoy, the Ottoman dynasty, Muhammad Ali, the Romanovs, and any orthodox royal house from the nomination for the Bosnian throne.

So candidates like Prince Waldemar of Denmark (the only son of Christian IX who never became king) or Prince Wilhelm, Duke of Södermanland would be ideal.

(Valdemar is better because with the situation of Bosnia so threatened, its relations with the great powers will be very important for Bosnia)

But regardless of the candidate, how do you think Bosnia will develop?

Bosnia is so religiously diverse as Albania that a Catholic prince is less likely than an Orthodox and Muslim prince (because he would risk isolating one religious group from the other).

So he prefers an independent king of Bosnia (Bosnia will inevitably have to throw itself under the protection of Austria because of Serbia, which threatens Bosnia existentially, whether with an independent king or the Habsburgs, so this point will not change with a different king)

Regardless of the sons of Franz Ferdinand, are there other candidates in your mind (exclude Savoy because they are Catholics like the Habsburgs and Emil of noble families or Protestant royal families as happened with Albania)

It seems appropriate (especially that Bosnia is more civilized than Albania, which was practically a tribal confederation and will not have problems there as happened with the Albanians)

Being a descendant of Skanderbeg, if he gains a Sanjak as part of the Kingdom of Bosnia, it may lead to a Bosnian-Albanian federation.

(But this leads to making the Muslims a majority and they will demand a Muslim king by virtue of their being the majority, and it will make relations with Montenegro and Greece bad)

Also, being from a small house may not help Bosnia, which needs a prominent person for protection from Serbia

(Prince Valdemar of Denmark is much better for Bosnia because he is close to Tsar and the King of the United Kingdom through his sisters, and the King of Greece is his brother and is married to Bourbon and thus Romania, Austria, Sweden and Spain through his wife)

Being far from the interests of Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Montenegro and the Ottomans guarantees much better relations with them (except for Serbia, which will be very hostile to them from day one).

How do you think the Kingdom of Bosnia will develop onwards?
