King Sebastian doesn't die at Alcaçer Quibir

Suppose that King Sebastian of Portugal did not die at the Battle of Alcaçer Quibir,

The majority of the Portuguese nobility does not die, the Iberian Union is never formed, the Spanish never get their huge naval power, Portugal is not forced to fight the English, the Dutch and the French, and the ship Madre de Deus is never captured, and the Portuguese Empire does not fall apart so dramatically as it did. Personally, I think the changes in history would be immense, what is your opinion? What do you think would be the main consequences?

Interesting POD, but I doubt that it will butterfly away conflicts with the English, Dutch and French, since they will still want a piece of the pie regarding trade. Maybe Portugal is in a better shape, but they will have to face competition nonetheless.

Pretty much this. Portugal's possessions were too tempting to the other countries, and the monopoly over the Asian trade couldn't be kept in the long run. Even before the Iberian Union the Portuguese were already dealing with foreign incursions in their areas, and it would only increase with time. Maybe the extent of the losses would be smaller, or the war would be delayed, but there would be conflict in the future. Also, Portugal doesn't need to be under the same monarch as Spain to enter a war with England or the Netherlands. They just need to be allied, and given how much the Aviz and the Habsburgs were intermarried that would be a strong possibility.

Read it. It was pretty good, and we always have fun with Mad Kings when they survive ;). Hope he will re-update it one day.

Thanks!:)
Well, I had a lot of problems since the last chapter posted, as now I'm working in two jobs and have little time to make proper research, and also suffered from a "writer's block" for too much time. But next Monday I'll start a two weeks vacation (in only one job, unfortunately) and so I have the intention of posting a new update until mid-June.
