King Oliver I

During the Commonwealth Era (in 1657, to be specific), there was an attempt to regularise Cromwell's rule, by making him King. He refused, but it took him about six weeks to arrive at that decision. Suppose, though, that he had accepted the crown, and the unmodified version of the Humble Petition and Advice. Would Charles II still have succeeded Richard IV, and if so, under what constitution, if any?

I know I'm necromancing a very old thread, but this is a good question.

Actually its better for Cromwell to be Lord Protector rather than King. As a King he would be bound by the Magna Carta, which would have limited his power. In fact, Cromwell held more power than almost all of the Stuart Monarchs.

Well, he did take a long time to deliberate the offer. Maybe the allure of monarchy had gotten the best of him and he pulled a Napoleon, if you will.

Declare himself Emperor:D?!? All kidding aside, is there any chance that he might take an Imperial title instead, to symbolize the fact that the Protectorate ruled all of the British Isles directly, not threw a Personal Union? Or if not Emperor of Britannia then King of Britannia or King of the British Isles? I mean what WOULD his Cromwell's actual title be?

I think he'd just stick with Lord Protector.
After all he's trying to avoid monarchial trappings de jure if not de facto.
Basically a dictatorial President for life scenario - very few in that situation have taken a monarchial title. Admittedly most are modern.
Is it too early for President to be a Head of State title - the privy council has a president but it is below the title of Lord Protector.

You knew you were necroing a four year old thread and did it anyway?

Every time someone digs up one of these moldering corpses the Mods all wind up having to reviewing reports, usually multiple reports, about it. Please don't do this again.
