King Alexander of the Netherlands

Alright, so before his death and the eventual ascension of Wilhelmina as Queen, the second son of William III, Alexander, was supposed to inherit the Dutch monarchy following the death of his elder brother William. What if Alexander hadn't caught typhoid and died? Wikipedia says that Alexander was in negotiations to be wed to either a Danish or Portuguese Princess. What would be the ultimate affect of this? I know that Wilhelmina's ascension led to the separation of Luxembourg from the Kingdom of the Netherlands so what if Alexander took the throne and Luxembourg continued to be a part of the Netherlands?

If Alexander lives and succeeds his father, he would probably known as king Willem IV, not king Alexander I (which is a pity). I do not know much about him, but a seems a decent person. He probably wouldn't be a great king, but he will be a competent one (which already is a big improvement from his father). He probably would accept that the power in the Netherlands lies in the hands of parliament and not the king, something his father never did and his sister also had some trouble with. Assuming he gets married and has children the Dutch monarchy continues. This is still a question though. The Dutch wikipedia mentions that his mother thought he didn't care for women. It doesn't mention he might be homosexual, so she might have been wrong (or maybe he was asexual). Still in those days neither being a homosexual or asexual should stop a monarch from having children. He did have a rather bad health his entire life, so i think he still won't live long. Anyway, i don't think it would lead to any major changes in Dutch politics.

But the major change will be Luxemburg. Luxemburg will remain focussed more on the Netherlands than Belgium, which will lead to some cultural and political differences in Luxmburg. As I am not from Luxemburg, i wouldn't know what this would mean for Luxemburg. Assuming Alexander has a male heir, Luxemburg will remain in personal union with the Netherlands. If this situation continues long enough (my guess to at least halfway in the 20th century) and the people in Luxemburg are happy with thehouse of orange-Nassau, they will probably change the constitution in such a way that Luxemburg remains in personal union, even if we would get a female monarch.

The big change though is WWI. OTL the Netherlands did not get involved in the first World War (and was better of because of it). If Luxemburg is in personal union with the Netherlands, this would probably means that the Netherlands is obligated to defend it whan Germany attacks it in the early stages of the war. I realy doubt the Germans would ignore Luxemburg, so the Netherlands gets involved in the war one way or another.

All in all a sruviving Alexander means the Netherlands would lack the best monarch it had OTL: queen Wilhelmina.
