Killing Lincoln

August 1864, it appears Lincoln narrowly missed being assassinated on his way from the White House to his quarters at the Soldiers Home.

What happens if he is?

Well, Lincoln died in 1881, so one has to imagine what the country might have looked like had without the "Father" in the white house for so long. It's difficult to imagine, for sure it's even possible...

 Beyond the blindingly obvious.
well, you did not say to go beyond that. You just wanted to know what happens, and i told you,:p

If anything, i think it would be cool to see if you could get a Seward Presidency in 1864. I think that would be awesome.:D

Then perhaps has kill Hamlin too. Or what kind of succession line of presidency had on 1860's?

Next in line would be Daniel Clark of NH - President Pro-tem of the Senate. He would serve until March 1865, and be replaced by whoever the Republicans had nominated in Lincoln's place.

Who would win the 1864 Presidential Election in November if Lincoln is assassinated in August 1864?

Seward?
Sumner?

Militarily, I do not see much changing,
Sheridan is about to launch his Valley Campaign
Sherman is on the outskirts of Atlanta
Grant is stuck in Petersburg. Maybe, Grant does another lunge ..... mass battle .....

Maybe Sherman. His capture of Atlanta on 2 Sep would make him the hero of the hour. Obviously he couldn't leave his post to campaign, but in those days many candidates didn't campaign anyway.

Considering there was an ongoing effort to recruit General Grant into the race justcmonths earlier, he might be a possibility here. Also might Salmon P. Chase throw his hat back into the ring.

If Hamlin is Acting PotUS through November, there's no reason AFAIK Seward couldn't run against him & even win.;)

Bigger question: does Hamlin deal with the war differently? Deal with the South differently?
