Arguably in the after 1900 but the POD would be earlier in the mid 1880's. In 1888 he stood as an independent labour candidate in a by-election in Lanarkshire. He was a prominent figure in the Scottish Miners federation and had expected to be supported by the Liberal caucus however unlike in England and Wales the miner's were unable to exert influence in the Liberal caucuses in Scotland and he was opposed by a Liberal. He was offered a Liberal seat by Herbert Gladstone but had decided that an independent labour party was needed and one was inaugrated in Bradford in 1892 and during the 1890's the TUC's links with the Liberal were broken.
What if Hardie remained a Liberal. The POD would be between 1888 and 1892 possibly with the Lanarkshire caucus adopting him. Would there have been no Labour party merely a socialist minority party that split the working class vote and kept the Tories in power or would it have beenm strangled at birth?
