Khosrow II More Successful/Longer Reign

Khosrow II More Successful/Longer Reign

King Khosrow II was the last great Sassanian ruler and had numerous triumphs during his reign. Khosrow however fell short of his ultimate goals and was deposed in 628. What if instead Khosrow had of been even more successful then OTL and was able to hold on to power? What impact would this have on the Arab Conquests? Byzantine Empire?

Probably the most successful Khisrau could be would be for him to remain peaceful, by this I mean keeping Maurice in control and defeating Phocas. If Phocas never came to power, Khisrau and Maurice would be staunch allies and there would be far more prosperity than otl with the two in a quasi alliance of sorts. In this scenario, the Arab conquest perhaps is beaten back.

I entirely agree. The man's wars gutted his country and were for the most part focused on destroying his nation's allies (not only the Romans, but also its allies in Arabia). Not to mention his domestic policies, which were beastly to say the least.

For Khosrow II, the way to win is not to play.

As for a longer reign, even if he'd stayed at peace, and focused instead on simply brutalizing his own people, I do not see any good coming from it. The shorter Khosrow's reign, the better.

The only negative to this scenario is we do not get to see the ascension of Heraclus. It would be inconceivable for him to rebel against Maurice, in which case Khisrau would screw it up and declare war. It fascinates me however, how incredible Heraclus was, Phocas was an impressive general but he was a child compared to Heraclus.
