Karzai assassinated

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamid_Karzai#Assassination_attempts

September 5, 2002, an assassination attempt was made on Hamid Karzai in Kandahar City. A gunman wearing the uniform of the new Afghan National Army opened fire, wounding Gul Agha Sherzai (former governor of Kandahar) and an American Special Operations officer. The gunman, one of the President's bodyguards, and a bystander who knocked down the gunman were killed when Karzai's American bodyguards returned fire.

This was just the first attempt. WI it had been successful?

It seems likely that another relatively powerless and bland Afghan exile would be placed in the office without much ceremony. Maybe the Taliban are excited about it for a while, but they can't really do much more than they did in OTL - hang out in the countryside and in Pakistan, and occasionally shoot at a NATO convoy or blow up a car bomb.

Hungary here we go

It would seem to me it might been an affective period for a Pusthan, to rule in fact or fiction i n the name of Nazir Shah, like Admiral Horthy, did in Hungary. There are a prominant number of monarchists.
Even the talaban in the beginning claimed to be working for his return.

Do you mean Zahir Shah? Because Nadir Shah died in 1933. Unless you mean someone else entirely.

There was brief speculation about the King returning, but as far as I know it was never seriously contemplated.

Although in 2002 Zahir Shah was given the title "Father of the Nation," but I don't know who exactly awarded him that title.

Also, does anyone know about Afghan popular opinion on the monarchy? Not like that really matters - the opinions of the American military and intelligence agencies decide the ultimate course of action - but it would be good background information.

yep, that's who I meant. My spelling, sucks, i'm sorry.
Recent surveys, said as of 07, the monarchy had 35 percent support.
