Some time ago, I started work on my own colour scheme for mapmaking. This is actually the third version, newly sorted alphabetically and contracted (past versions were stored in different programs and sorted by region). Unfortunately it is all in hex codes, although converters are easy to find online.

The main distinguishing features of this colour scheme are that it was built almost completely from scratch. Only Serbia, Chile, and a few others are taken directly from other colour schemes.

The other is that I decided to throw out using different colors for different ideologies (almost). Instead I have decided to choose the Omniatlas path and go with internationally recognized governments vs. rebels. Communist or Conservative rebel governments get their own overlay colours, and they will stay these colours until they gain international recognition (or historical recognition for ancient polities).

Some notes: I have decided to classify the Soviet Union along "world socialist state" lines, since it and the RSFSR actually competed for power at points. Additionally, I have used a policy of classifying Chinese, Caliphate, and Moroccan dynasties by their place of origin. China actually has its own list of colours.

Also, British Raj and United India use the same colour. Use the civil war option for Indian revolts, and the territory option for a non-dissolved BEIC.

Note: Due to the abundance of Chinese dynasties, cliques, and states, I have decided to give them colours based on where they were/are originated. I have used the current provinces of the Republic of China. The only exceptions are the Kuomindang and Communists, which changed their centres of control between widely separated locations whilst staying the same entity. Unlike other polities, the colours for Communist China and Nationalist China are not overlays of one another due to the different and sometimes simultaneous incarnations of the Kuomintang.


Basic:

1-Thick Line (#000000) - Demarcated National Frontier

1-Thick Line (#4E4E4E) - Republic/Fief Subject Frontier

1-Thick Grey Line (#9B9B9B) - Federal Subject Frontier

1-Thick Dotted Line (Varied) - Claimed Frontier

Solid (#E1E1E1) - No central control

Solid (#B6DBF4) - Water Bodies

Checkerboard (Nation Colour/#E1E1E1) - Advanced culture without a state


Control:

Military/Police
Foreign Policy
Domestic
Government

If a polity has control over only one of these criteria for a region, the region is given an outline of that polity’s colour.

If a polity has control over two of these for a region, the region is given alternating stripes of that polity’s colour.

If a polity has control over three of these for a region, the region is given that polity’s colour except for an outline.


Revolution:

If a country is experiencing a non-liberal or communist revolution, areas controlled by the revolutionaries are given a 25% black overlay.


If it is experiencing a liberal or communist revolution, areas controlled by the revolutionaries are given a 25% red overlay.


The government that currently has international recognition with be given that nation’s default colour, regardless of its ideology.


Territories:

Territories are given a 50% white overlay.


Protectorates are given a 25% white overlay.

Mumbai/Gujarat color is now also used for Western Satraps.

Added Crimea (Greek) color.

Jordan/Ghassanids color can now be repurposed for Nabatean.

Korea color can now be repurposed for Silla. Added colours for ancient Korean kingdoms.

Watered down the eye-melting cyan color I gave Chekiang Province.

Try it in paint.net and click the antialiasing enable/disable button. Then put in your colours with the hex code.

So I've done a bit of reshaping to the scheme, but unfortunately I don't find I have the will to sit down for 10 hours and slot colors into a table all on my own. If anyone is still interested in this, then I would be happy to do a collaboration. If not, KAPHYD-KOS will unfortunately/mercifully? remain confined to my own personal maps.

Additionally, what is the main program used on this site to draw maps. I use GIMP, where you can just paste a hex code into the color tool. Is the one used by most people not able to accept hex codes?

Any ideas/volunteers/suggestions?

fwiw, I use PSP, which can receive RGB, HSL, or html hexcodes as colour input values (or selecting colours from a palette using a mouse).
