Künstlerleben in the West / USSR

I'd like to start a discussion where you can change the destiny of any artist (musician, writer, etc.) born and trained in Russia whose career and legacy would be different had he/she made a different choice between the West and the Soviet Union during the interwar period.

I'm always fascinated by the great pianists and violinists of the Russian school, sometimes I imagine those who ended up in the West swapping places with those in the USSR, e.g.
Sergei Rachmaninoff, Vladimir Horowitz, Jascha Heifetz in the USSR
Emil Gilels, Grigory Ginzburg, David Oistrakh in the West
