Responding to the intercommunal violence between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots, Turkey moved to invade Cyprus in June of 1964. They stopped when Lyndon Johnson sent a strongly worded telegram saying that if Turkey did so, it would lose US support. With the Soviets on their border, Turkey complied. However, what if they didn't, and Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1964? Would it start a war with Greece? That could be disastrous for NATO, but it didn't start a war in 1974, so I suppose it's not a forgone conclusion.
