June 18, 1155

On June 18, 1155 Pope Adrian VI crowned Frederick I Holy Roman Emperor at St. Peter's Basilica. The Romans begin to riot, and Frederick spent his coronation day putting down the revolt. Suppose Frederick I is killed on his coronation day.
His sons: Frederick V, Duke of Swabia; Henry VI, Holy Roman Emperor; Frederick VI, Duke of Swabia; and Otto I, Count of Burgundy are not born.
Who becomes the Holy Roman Emperor?

Would Conrad, Count Palatine of the Rhine be any better?

Or could his first wife Adelaide of Vohburg, take the throne?

Or even his distant cousin, Otto I, Duke of Bavaria?

If Conrad of Hohenstaufen, Count Palatine of the Rhine becomes the Holy Roman Emperor, he would be Conrad III. His sons Frederick (died before 1189) and Conrad (died 1186) should live much longer.

If Otto I, Duke of Bavaria becomes the Holy Roman Empire, he would be Otto IV.
