Julius Caesar Is Never Born

I would guess it would fall regardless to a different general, who sets up a different dynsty

Look at Sulla and Marius they took complete control but kept within a framework - it wouldn't take long for another general to do the same and just break the framework of the Republic.

I agree that the Republic as it stood before Julius Caesar was doomed. Without a single head, it was far too difficult to get things done. Now what would replace it without Julius Caesar is an interesting question. I think what might be just as interesting is what if Julius lived but Octavius didn't? The transition to the principate depended on both of them.

In any case, so we have a general, maybe Pompey, attempt to become dictator for life. He might succeed, but likely as note, his ambition will, like Caesar's, ultimately destroy him. Now without an Octavius to deftly manipulate the situation, you might have decades of civil war. I think it could well be the case that Rome ultimately decides into several successor states.
