How would things have unfolded had Caesar not adopted Octavian? This decision caught everyone off guard at the time.

Note that Caesarion (his son with Cleopatra) is still alive at the time of his death. Caesar doesn't officially acknowledge him, but he lets the kid use the nickanme Caesarion. Caesarion is eventually killed by Octavian.

Do we go back to a republic for a little while longer, at least until Caesarion attains his majority (provided he survives to that point)? How does Cleopatra figure into things?

I'm not sure if Caesar seriously intended to make the Republic an empire. If this assumption is true, Caesar wouldn't necessarily have made a big deal about nominating a successor.

I wonder what would have happened if Caesar's will required that the successor revert back to a republican form of government...
