JS 1870's PoD/WI's

For reasons of my own, I'm trying to think of a good PoD for a WI in the 1870's that:

* preferably not in the field of war or politics (something in inventions, art, the economy, etc)
*but if it is, it is not from American History
* preferred years 1874 or 1875, and closer to them if not

JFP, I love how all of your threads start with abbreviations for which there is no explanation. Many of these I have never seen used on this forum before. Have they been established as standard shorthand at some point and I just missed the message?
In short, what does "JS" mean?

"JS" as in "Just Some" -- you may remember I used it before in "JS Good AH Settings for Mob Epics"; it denotes a thread that asks for suggestions for TL/WI/PoD ideas...

Maybe -- certainly interesting, but as I'm thinking of a Marx dies in 1848 TL, this feels superflous...

True. You could have a POD which butterflies away some or all of the inventions which followed in quick succession after 1875 - the telephone, the light bulb, the phonograph etc. I'm sure there would be some butterflies in there somewhere (possibly relating to the delay in American-European communications?) but really I'm not sure where this TL would go.

Still, throwing an idea out at you.

What if the Bone Wars never occur? Two fair options there:
-Marsh & Cope pool their resources and end up as partners in the field of Paleontology. Both were excellet managers of men, espionage directors (just read a bit about what stunts they pulled on each other!), and expedition leaders. Marsh, I'd say, was a bit more thorough and logical in terms of research than Cope, but Cope was a much better writer and showman-- the imagery in his writings can be incredibly vivid at times.

-Either Marsh or Cope die in the midst of the Indian Wars, leaving one or the other to dominate the field of American paleontology for the last quarter of the nineteenth century.
It's science-y, it's full of cowboys and indians and adventure, and it's got dinosaurs. What more could you want?

Certainly worth considering -- in fact, I had a rough outline of an idea where the failure to invent the light bulb leads to a longer Long Depression, which prolongs British world dominance -- your idea is much appreciated :)

It is sweet, I'll give you that... :D

Here's a big one.

Avert the Long Depression, or at least the initial catalyst in the Panic of 1873.

Grant IIRC was actually planning vetoing the Coinage Act of 1873 but changed his mind.

I like the idea of a TL that changes the Panic of 1873, but a PoD in an American piece of legislation is a little to close to American politics, which I have enough TL ideas on.

What would be a good PoD where Germany doesn't take the lead on Britain during the panic?
