Journal of the Aftermath of 51st Latitude

I had an idea for an Alternate History world but didn't know everything about the times and didn't know all the butterflies or if it was even realistic enough. So I decided that instead of a timeline I would have it in story/novel form. Also the POD is during the OregonTerritory crisis and the bigger POD is in the Civil War (its based on a book series) but all the stroy is after 1900 which why it is in this forum. Hopefully its good and told realisticly enough. But I after seeing Black Op footage I wasn't sure if I wanted to write about the WWI analouge first or the WWII one or the Vietnam one. So I decided for practice I would write bits and pieces from different eras and then start at the WWI plotline.

Also there is a certain asian racial word Im not sure if its ok. But the US and Japan havent finished their fight like OTL so theres still alot of hate and I wanted it to sound realistic and having watched the Pacific recently I felt I needed to add it But if people want me to change it I will immeditaly. Because if you know me you'll understand how much I hate racists. Also please Constructive criticism. Tell me whats good and whats bad. but please at least tell be how to improve.

anyways starting off.

The first thing that Robert Sledge smelled as he jumped off the Helicopter was the smell of gasoline mixed with the smell of the jungle. He looked around Marines were moving around in their dark green uniforms while some worked on battered Jeeps. He spotted a lone M110* Eisenhower Heavy Keg (Tank) flanked by two M64** Patton Kegs on each side.
Some of them had their flak vests zipped up all the way, others didn't. Sledge didn't want to take chances and new he was suppose to be an example having come out of Annapolis. He has his Silver Cup*** strapped on his head and his flak vest zipped up. Though he hadn't yet received his weapon. He had been trained to fire the M6 Assault Rifle, or Cowboy Rifles**** as he had the Vets of Thailand refer to them. He saw a Black Sergeant and a Hispanic Corporal walk up to him.
“You Lieutenant Sledge?” The Sergeant asked. Sledge nodded.
“Captain Blake as me to show you to the barracks. And to give you a quick run down. I'm Sergeant Joshua Freeman, this here is Edgardo Juarez. But we all call him Grande.” Sledge looked at “Grande”, the name didn't fit. He looked to be 5 foot 6 inches if that.
“Were are you from?” Sergeant Freeman asked.
“Mobile Alabama, you?”
“I was born is Baton Rouge, Louisiana. But my dad got a new job and we had to move to Vancouver, Jefferson when I was ten. Grande here is from a small town in Rio Grande.”
“Really?” Asked Sledge surprised. Grande nodded at him.
“My father was a member of the Blue Banditos back in the Third Global War.”
“Interesting,” replied Sledge, “my father was a Marine as well. Fought in the retaking of Midway and was at D-Day by Gibraltar.”
“My father was in Dallas during the whole battle.” Freeman said adding in. "Was sent over the Trinity as Azteca bombers staffed their transport. Then was part of the rear guard as they fell back over the same river. Hell even had a run in with Richard Winters.”
“The same Winters that took and held Winter's House.”
“Yes sir.” Replied the Sergeant as he got into the driver's seat of a Jeep. “Hop in sir we got a short drive to the barracks. Grande you got the ears and eyes. Watch for mortars, you know Jackie***** loves to toss us a few ever once in a while as a gift. They're bound to give us a few to celebrate President King's inauguration.”
“Isn't he being inaugurated in only a few minuets?” Sledge asked. Grande looked at his clock.
“He's having it at 900 hours and D.C is eleven hours behind us so lets see that would mean it would be 2000 hours here and its currently 7:56 and 2000 is eight.”
“So four minuets.” Sledge said, it wasn't a question it was a statement.
“Yes sir.” Freeman replied. “Wish the radios they put on these things could get reception from the east coast. The first black President in the history of America and I'm not going to hear it. Aw hell this radio took a bullet a couple of days ago. Wouldn't work anyways.”
“You know how I was reading that alternate history book the other day?” Grande said looking out as they passed a munitions area.
“I've already stated that “A Man on a High Throne” is as unrealistic as hell. Mexico taking over all of the Southwestern United States. Even if we didn't take over 100,000 of their troops prisoner at Dallas, even if we lost there we still would of won eventually. Now maybe is France won they would of annexed Belgium- thankfully we'll never know.”
“Anyways sarge I was thinking. Imagine if the Liverpool/Gettysburg incident never occurred. What if reconstruction didn't completely work and blacks had to wait longer for civil right. Imagine the possibilities. Martin Luther king Jr. could have been a civil rights activist and not JFK's VP. Imagine if the first Black President wasn't elected till sometime in the early 21century. By then he might not even be descended from Slaves. His father might have been Kenyan or something.

“Sounds far fetched.” Sledge replied in an emotionless voice. And with that the conversation was dropped. Wanting to hear more about the area Sledge decided to strike up another conversation. “You hear about that German Aircraft Carrier. What is it called? The Holtzendorff, yeah the Holtzendorff.
“Yes sir we have.” Freeman said replying. “It's part of a small German Naval Task Force sent to help us out. Doubt it will do much if anything. Fly a few patrols at most, but our F-8 Poltergeists can handle any Mitsubishi Jet the Japs(Japanese not sure if I should use that term or not) can put in the sky. Germany is just to far from this shithole country. Their sphere of influence doesn't overlap with Japan like us.
“Not to mention their attention the German public is more concerned with those terrorists out of Champagne and Franche-Comte than a few Japs in Thailand.” Grande added.
“I thought we were fighting a bunch of North Thais that wanted to install a king or emperor or someone after the old puppet government fell. We all know where they're getting their supplies from no doubt, but to spend soldiers lives down here in secret?”
“Well maybe they are just North Thais, but if you ask me sir, if it talks like a Jap, looks like a jap, acts like a Jap then it probably is a Jap.”
“Especially if it smells like a dead Jap.” Grande said with a slight smirk on his face. Joshua just grinned.
“Yeah Japanese want their puppet back and if they can get the Thailand Peninsula back from the Dutch- then hell they'll be willing to start a war I bet.” Freeman said driving around a hole in the road.
“I don't know how long things can go on like this.” Sledge said looking out of the Jeep. “But the Japanese aren't completely insane. They don't want to start a war just yet. Especially when the Russians have a million or more soldiers on the border of Mongolia and the areas that Japan got in the far east at the end of the last war. Japan wants their puppet back. But not as much as the Ruskies want Vladivostok back. Not even close.”
“Russia got pretty damn close to exchanging fissions****** with those guys back in 64'. But JFK made it clear what would happen. Damn Hirohito. We wouldn't even of had to go through that if he didn't put those missiles in western Mongolia. But the whole thing blew over. Still looking back maybe we should of finished it then. Sure Perm and Omsk probably would have been vaporized but the Japanese couldn't do much damage to us then. Probably would of hit Singapore and Manila******* but-.
“But now they claim that their missiles can reach the west coast.” Sledge said finishing Freeman's thought.
“Yeah but I guess back then Alexei didn't feel like having another Russian capital get fizzed********. He wanted those fissions out of range, and you don't mess with the German Czar*********. Constitutional Monarchy or not.

“Oorah.” Grande said. “Aw shit you hear that-” Sledge had heard a series of thuds off in the distance but hadn't reacted.
“Aw Shit those aren't just mortars!” Sergeant Joshua Freeman yelled slamming on the brakes. “Those guns sounded big.” He and Grande jumped out of the Jeep.
“Get to the ditch Lieutenant!” Grande yelled, Sledge heard a few thuds this time he heard the Thaiguer's********** guns fire a second volley. He didn't need to be told twice. He jumped out of the back of the jeep and ran for the deeply dug ditch on the side of the road. He was only a few feet away when the first few shells hit the grounds. The earth shook beneath him and he stumbled as something ping of the back of his silver cup helmet. He hit the ground and laid there stunned for a few seconds. He felt a pair of hands grab his arms and drag him into the ditch. He landed on his back and saw Sergeant Freeman land back into the ditch and laid down on the ground with his hands over his head. Sledge only faintly realized that his helmet had rolled of somewhere when he landed.
The shelling went on for ten minuets or so before letting up. Robert Sledge opened his eyes and looked around. Their was dust in the air but he and the two other Marines were unhurt. He stood up and looked over the ditch and were shells had pocketed the road and other areas. The screams of the wounded could also be heard and a fire was raging at one of the munition tents.
“My God.” He whispered.
“Those guns were a helluva lot bigger than usual!” Freeman said standing up a cursing.
“And a bombardment of that strength doesn't usually last that long.” Grande said looking around. “Lets move while we can hopefully that was just to celebrate King's inauguration and we'll be able to help the wounded.” With that the trio lifted themselves out of the ditch.
“Oh by the way Lieutenant,” Freeman said turning to Sledge and handing him his helmet,” Welcome to Thailand.” Sledge looked at the helmet and turning it around in his hands spotted a piece of shrapnel fused with the helmet.

Great Work!

I really like not knowing what this means

Was sent over the Trinity as Azteca bombers staffed their transport.

That makes it realistic :)

I like the alternate history speculation in an alternate history world...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henning_von_Holtzendorff is presumably the guy whom the aircraft carrier is named after, and if he is true to his OTL credentials he'll be famous for convincing the Kaiser to go with USW and starve Britain - and presumably celebrated because it worked

Like it a lot, but I need to study all the stars!

Best Regards
Grey Wolf

Thanks sorry I misspelled straffed basicly Dallas=Stainggrad and while the trinity isnt as important as the Volga (it gets crossed) it was still an important defensive line

The US and German Empire were Allies in the Second Global War (WWI) youll see in later writings

A purely technical comment: instead of stacking stars beyond about three, use other symbols.

You can do things like [1] or ^1.

Thanks I got school tommorow so I dont have time tonight but Ill try to get another section in tommorow. it will be Spec Ops in Japan then well jumped into the WWII anaolouge

So instead of Spec Ops in Japan we get a WWI analouge Michale in Canada but hey :p

Time:4:00 A.M, 400 hours.

General Cassidy looked through his binoculars out into no-man's-land. He was a ways back from the frontlines in a secondary trench, he couldn't see much but the early dawn's light did illuminate some of the landscaped. He was sure it had once been a beautiful location, but now artillery had turned up the land and not a single blade of grass could be seen. He ducked when he heard a rifle fire with a crack. The chances of getting hit by a sniper was slim, still he kept a Silver Cup Helmet on his head.
“Bit of rain last night last night. But good, damn good if you ask me, that we're finally going to see the Keg in action.” His protege said. Cassidy turned around for a bit and nodded.
“I agree George, damn fine to test the Keg in combat.” He lowered his binoculars and handed them to George. He stepped forward and looked out, he like General Butch Cassidy was wearing a Silver Cup helmet. He had a 1903 Sprinfiled slung on his back and a revolver in his shoulder holster.
“Sir I think its time to show these Canadians the Americans are coming- and we're here to stay.”
“I agree George.” General Cassidy coughed, and putting on a more formal voice. “Now Lieutenant Colonel, go assemble your men. We move in an hour.”
“Yes sir.”
The General looked above his head he could hear artillery whistling overhead. For twelve hours the most concentrated use of artillery in U.S history would pound the British lines. Then they Kegs would move in. He looked west and less numoureous but very concentrated barrage could be seen. There were few Kegs to use only a dozen for his main assault and only four to go in behind the Storm Rangers in the west.

****
A lone U.S Infantryman pulled himself out of the trench. That trench was connected to a series of other trenches that ran all the way from Lake Ontario to lake Huron. For the last year Canadian and British troops had stopped the U.S Army's advance into the heart of Canada. In the east were the lone Army Captain was preparing to fight the U.S Army had been stopped at Mississauga. On the west side of the peninsula the British had stopped their advance just past Collingwood. Early that spring the the U.S Army had attempted repeatedly tried to pry Mississauga away from the Canucks. The attacks had been disastrous, 1200 men dieing on a single day. The carnage had gotten so bad Teddy Roosevelt had to step in and halt the attacks when troops started to threaten mutiny.
No attacks had been launched since and it seemed that the Peninsular front would stalemate just like the Germans and Belgians(2) in France. For a year it had. Dwight wonder how the Germans felt be able to see Paris(3) but not be able to reach it. He almost felt that way when it came to Toronto, but he couldn't even see it.
No whistle blew behind him. Instead up and down the trench a few hundred men climbed out of ladders and out into No-man's-land. Usually a barrage would last for days before they attacked, but the barrage before this lasted only three hours. But it was very concentrated. He could hear numerous gas shells going off. He pressed his gas mask close to his face more for comfort than anything else. The infantry going out was dispersed and most of the enemy's artillery was focused on the bombardment a good fifty miles east.
As far as the Captain was concerned it made perfect sense for the Canucks to send most of their forces east. The Yanks would throw most of their forces into one area like back in the spring, right?
Captain Eisenhower smiled to himself as he loaded a magazine into his Browning Automatic Rifle. A few of his men he was leading came(4) up behind and they fell into a wide but semi-orderly trot. The men behind him were armed with German made MP18s. The Germans had also suggested using their updated 1918 77 artillery piece. These fired overhead to try to keep the Canucks heads down. He also heard Maxims firing over their heads, trying to find that ark that would let them fire bullets into the enemy's trench.
As the Captain walked into and out of a ditch created by multiple artillery shells. A soldier came up to him.
“You think this is it Dwight?' The big breakout that higher ups have been promising us since this war began?”
“God I hope so Bob.” Dwight replied. He remembered the Colonels and Major talking about how all they had to do was break through the trenches and take Toronto they the going would be easy all the way to the 47th Parallel. Maybe that would be the case, so far though it looked as though the frontlines would never move. As if the god-forsaken war would never end. Dwight dove as the first machine gun bullets flew over their heads.
“How far do you think we are away sir?” A Sergeant asked, Dwight noticed he was black. He had heard rumors of a Black Storm Ranger Battalion being formed, but he didn't know that they had been sent into battle.
“I say we're about a hundred meters away possibly a bit more.” Dwight replied, he looked behind him. “Macmillan!” He yelled out. A young Corporal crawled up to him.
“Yes sir?” He asked.
“I want you to fire a lighter towards that machine gun. Then if command is true to their word, we'll be able to sit back and enjoy the show.” Macmillan nodded and load the special tube and grenade into the barrel of his Springfield. He had been assigned this duty just for this one battle. He fired the grenade and it landed within a few yards of the machine gun, red light started to illuminate the area.
From above a pair of American Iroquois (the American copy of the German Albatross) dove down spotting the light and machine gun muzzle flashes. They fired their twin machine guns on. They ran the length of the trench chewing up dirt and hitting the machine gun position. While this happened Dwight and his men forward as far as they dared. After several passes the Iroquois broke off and went after another target. Two of the Storm Rangers nodded and took out their grenades and primed them. Then they griped the wooden handle and threw them into the trench.
Dwight heard a series of satisfying bangs and smiled. “Move up move up!” with that they sprinted to the trench and jumped in. He landed in the enemy trench near were the grenade had went off. A Canadian was dazed by the blast and just now getting his surroundings back. He tried to lift his Lee Enfiled rifle and fire it but Dwight fired a burst from his BAR into his chest. Blood painted the side of the trench as the young Canadian fell back.
“Clear out this stretch of the trench then get out and move on and let the regular infantry clean up. Macmillan pop your green lighter I've made it this far, I don't want to get cut down by our own birds.”
“Yes sir.” And he took out a grenade. Dwight signaled Bob Gordon and Atticus Finch(6) to go ahead of him. They moved quickly along the trench, the British trench like the American's zigzagged to minimized blast and shrapnel damage. A British soldier tried to get the jump on them but Atticus fired one shot from he MP18 and hit the soldier right in the head. Eventually they ran across more Storm Rangers and the both nearly cut each other down.
“Fireworks!”
“Saratoga!” Dwight nodded as he heard the challenge word be replied to correctly. “Captain Morrel.” He said with a nod.
“Captain Eisenhower.” Morrel said in the same crisp tone.
“This area is clear, main force with take care of the left overs. For now we need to keep moving forward, “Eisenhower looked into the map sown into his jacket, “there should be an ammo depot not to far back that's my objective.”
“Good that should pull away anyone defending the artillery. If they even have anyone. I doubt that Canucks and limes ever thought they would see this.”
Dwight D. Eisenhower couldn't help but agree.”

Patton cursed as he hit the side of the Keg. It was already 90 degrees inside the beast and it was steadily climbing. And its cross country performance- could be improved. Still for its for time in Combat Patton felt that the Proto-1 was doing well. He just wished that they had more. General Cassidy could probably talked good ole Teddy into more. But it would take time for them to get here. Also the overall U.S General in Canada wanted the attack to be launched on the 4th for a morale boost. Already two Kegs had gotten bogged down in the mud from a series of light showers the previous night. And another had taken a direct hit from British artillery.
Still they had finally, FINALLY! Pushed back beyond the main Canadian trench line and were swinging around Mississauga. A stubborn Canadian company had tried to set up in the city and had a massed almost a dozen machine guns. He wished he could get one of those new radios in here and coordinate the battle more effectively. But he couldn't complain, that company would be taken out sooner or later.
“Still if we lose all our Kegs we won't keep moving forward.” And as if his thoughts had called upon Satan (or from the Canadian's point of view God) himself another Keg went up in flames from a direct hit from Artillery. Patton cursed again. The Proto-1s could take Machine bullets and most shrapnel. But with a top speed of only 8 MPH they were vulnerable to artillery. (Author's note:The Proto-1 is shaped similar to the German A7V but has more rounded edges and its track goes all the way around like the British Mark 1).
Patton's Keg however got through the fire and sneaked within range of a British artillery company. The Keg's main gun fired with a loud boom. And a artillery piece went up in smoke. The remaining three teams tried desperately to lower their guns. But another keg came up. It stopped for an ominous second before firing it's main gun. A six pounder in the front of the Keg. By then Patton's main gun had reloaded and Patton's gunners didn't have to get the order. They fired, taking out another gun. The last team seeing their comrades die en mass simply ran at this point. Many were cut down as the Kegs turned -albeit slowly- so their side machine guns could fire.
“Revenge.” Patton said with a grin.
(1)It seems that it might not of been around in 1918 but really more of an area. But I couldn't find any other cities in that area to use and this is AH so..
(5)It was originally going to be on St. Patrick's day but I'm not so sure how Canadian spring's are and how muddy they are. I might edit this later.
(2)Still not sure how to get this. But Belgium is a German ally ITTL any suggestions on how I can get that to happen.
(3)With Belgium as an ally the Germans got closer to Paris.
(4)Try reading this part while listening to “And your world will burn” (the Black Ops trailer music) really epic.
(6) In english we're doing a lot with “To kill a mocking bird” and since Atticus is the best shot in the county I decided to give him some background history. Even in a AH universe.

The Oregon Crisis spilled over into an inconclusive war with the Border being drawn at the 51st Latitude (though Vancouver Island is still British) this leads to Britian intervention in the Civil War (with a different POD but basicly takes Brittainia's Fist and Rainbow of Blood as the backstory) theres some more backstrory but in the end you got the

Entente-United Kingdom,France,Austria-Hungary,Spain, Japan with Mexico as an observer.

and the

Portland Alliance-United States of America, Germany, Russia, Italy, Greece

Theres a group of other smaller countries involved but those are the main players.

Heres a map for reference of the Political Alliance is Europe
