A quick little thing I wanted to ask (even though, I believe it is highly ASB): Is this scenario, shown in the French Alternate History Comic Series "Jour J" Issue N°8 is possible.
What happens? Well, here's the story (expect a huge block of text incoming...):
• On May 29th 1968, Charles de Gaulle and his wife Yvonne tries to escape Paris - like they did IOTL to see General Massu in Baden-Baden, Germany - but have to go back to the Elysée Palace after his convoy's attack. The news of the attempted escape angers the Parisian population who gathers and storms the Presidential Palace, killing De Gaulle.
• Immediately after hearing the news, Massu and his troops crosses the border with Germany but are blocked at the height of Nogent-sur-Marne by Général Jacques Pâris de Bollardière's tanks, who's hostile to Gaullists troops, causing serious fightings. Massu retreats and suffered many losses. De Bollardière however, not wanting to be part of a military putsch leave the army.
• The Barricades rises all around Paris (and other French cities, though only Paris is covered) and militias from each political sides fight fiercely in Paris during the summer. Hundreds are killed.
• During the Winter '68-'69, a pro-Gaullist army corps encircles the French capital - the event is known as the "Second Commune". The following spring, a pro-Maoist commando storms the facilities of the Albion Plateau - where French nuclear weapons are. After taking control, they launch two nuclear weapons on the Gaullist forces, in the Western "Banlieue" of Paris, vaporizing them and parts of the city from the face of the Earth.
(Two hypothesis are shown in the comic: the commando was helped by pro-Maoist atomist engineers from Saclay, led by J.P. B.O. (Unknown); or, the order came from the PC Jupiter, at the hands of left-wing militias.)
• The nuking of Paris caused shockwaves worldwide as the US, the USSR and China decided to "help" factions. The US Army lands on the beaches of Normandy (sounds familiar?), while Soviet Paratroopers are dropped on Eastern France (Alsace, Lorraine, Burgundy and Franche-Comté). The Chinese helps indirectly their pro-Maoist troops.
Paris is split between different factions: Pro-US, Pro-Soviet, Pro-Maoists, but also, fanatical catholics from Vendée and armed punks.
The story is set in 1976 and the war still rages on - though the situation is locked in a stalemate, with occasional shootings and attacks to control key points in Paris.
There are spoliers down there, because I'll tell you the ending of the comic.
Here are a few seconds to let you decide... Ready? OK!
Pheeew! That was long.

• After several ambushes, our hero - a US journalist who's smuggling art masterpieces from Montmartre to the US - pays punk fighters with drugs in exchange for a bombardment - because why the hell not? The attack, however, prooves to be way too powerful and war explodes in Paris. Forced to intervene, US troops tries to storm Montmartre with tanks, but the ground - weakned by quarries and caves - crumble, causing the collapse of the Sacré-Coeur Basilica.
• The event shocks the world and the UNO decides to take action and intervene directly - there was a veto by France which blocked any possible manœuvres.
• Ten years later, 1986, the country is still being rebuilt by the UN. Elections are about to occur, with Michel Rocquard (The Parti Socialiste Uni's leader) most likely to become the first president of the 6th Republic of France.
