Joseph Ferdinand of Bavaria becomes other Charles II of Spain

There were some discussions about WI Joseph Ferdinand of Bavaria had survived to become king of Spain, avoiding the Spanish Succession War. But he was the fruit of as much Habsburg inbreeding as Charles II, maybe even more. So, WI he lives, but becomes a second Charles II, living for more or less 40 years but being unable to produce a heir. How would be a Spanish Sucession crisis delayed for 30 or 40 years (let's imagine he dies around 1737)?

*wikis up genealogy* Well, succession in Bavaria is secured, due to Joseph Ferdinand's half-brothers... but they are just haöf-brothers and have no claim to the Spanish throne. So indeed it would again be a fight between Habsburgs and Bourbons. Just that this time (1730-1740), Habsburg has been reduced to Emperor Charles VI. Unlike 30 years earluer IOTL, the Habsburgs could not produce a junior member to start an own branch in Spain (that was Charles initial role...), as Charles VI is the last remaining male Habsburg. Though, as both his daughter were married with Lorraines (and thus both would form the combined house of Habsburg-Lorraine) I guess he could present his younger daughter Maria Anna and her husband, Charles Alexander of Lorraine as candidates for the Spanish throne....

And by, say, 1735 (being in the exact middle of 1730 and 1740) Spain is not that overpowerful compared to the rest of Europe anymore as it was in 1701. Interstingly enough, in 1735 there already IS a succession war going on, the one of the Polish Succession. And 5 years later there will be a War of the Austrian Succession! Really, one doesnt even need to try to make a succession-wank in this time period :D But this also makes the sides clear: Saxony will back Austria, as France is the enemy in Poland, while Bavaria will back France as IOTL, as it has its own claims for the Austrian succession. Prussia will remain neutral, as it generally did unde rteh Soldier King Frederick William, whereas most other HRE states will back Austria as they did in most wars against France IOTL...

Combined War of the Spanish and Austrian Successions?
It would probably be the War of Habsburg Succession then.;)

It seems very interesting. Could not Maria Josepha, the daughter of Joseph I married to Augustus III of Saxony be an alternative candidate? Maybe making the Wettins giving up the unstable Poland for a more secure Spanish throne?

And Susano, why don't you use it (a heirless Joseph Ferdinand) in your Royal Knockout TL? BTW, I demand a new installment!!:D

Its a possible peace scenario. After all, IOTL, all kinda wacky things happened in peaces to wars of succession IOTL - in the War of the Polish Succession the Saxon Elector kept Poland, the French-backe dpretender got compensate dwith Lorraine, and the House of Lorraine got compensated with Tuscany, by sheer fiat of the grand powers (they had no marital or whatever links to there). However, Saxony-Poland and Austria will be on the same side, and arranging a switching of sides with condition slike that is... complicated.

The thing there are rules for female succession. Basically, female succession works on the principle of "proximity by blood" and not by dynastical seniority. As Emperor Charles is (in this scenario and IOTL) the last Emperor, Austrian Monarch an dHabsburg pretender to the Spanish throne, their daughters are the next heirs, and NOT the dynastically senior daughters of his elder brother. Had Charles died before assuming his titles, Maria Josepha, going by proximity of blood, would have been heir, but as it is... which is exactly why Maria Theresia inherited IOTL.

Of course, thats just the legal-abstract-official-theoretical. Doesnt hinder anybody from making claims if he has the power to do so. But I think Saxony would concentrate on Poland. For some reason they never raised a ruckus in the OTL Austrian War of Succession, either...
