Jones and Jones and the Rolling Stones

Early in his London blues club period, Brian Jones met Paul Jones, the future lead singer of Manfred Mann, and considered forming a band with him before meeting Mick Jagger and Keith Richards instead.

Considering that Brian Jones was basically the glue that held the infant Stones together at first, what if he and Paul Jones had formed "the Rolling Stones" based around the two of them instead?

I don't think that the band would ever get off the ground. Paul had a much poppier and mainstream sensibility about him and Brian was much more into experimental blues and jazz, so this would have created a lot of conflict even in the practice space. This was also pre-drugs Brian Jones, when he was arrogant, confident, loud and would often solve his problems with his fists, so Paul would often be at the receiving end, especially if he suggested they sing a song like "Do Wa Diddy" ;)

The Rolling Stones as they were initially - the antithesis of the "friendly" Beatles was an image created and fostered by their manager Andrew Loog Oldham, were a happy collision of five extremely creative and talented people who, if they did it alone would never had made the impact that they did together.

Interesting topic to say the least!
