WI the Jomon people are capable of either resisting the Yayoi advance completely, or at least containing them in Kyushu (which is where the Yayoi first appeared in Japan, IIRC)? Basically, how would Japan evolve culturally and politically if it remains dominated by the Jomon culture.
For one, Japan would probably remain "barbarian" for much longer, since it was the Yayoi who brought over rice farming, metallurgy, advanced architechture, etc. Still, being so close to China, these things will eventually spread there through trade. Obviously, the linguistic situation would be totally different, but still probably have some Chinese influence. Also, Shintoism would never come to be and the religion of Japan would probably resemble the Ainu religion.
Keep in mind that most of this comes from a book a read almost a year ago and from Wikipedia, so please tell me if I'm wrong. So, what are your thoughts?
