[Joke Thread] Why did Police Cops change characterization after the pilot?

OOC: The following thread relates to an element in the universe of The Simpsons, in the episode "Homer to the Max".

Many of us are familiar with the series Police Cops, started during Fox's 1999 midseason, alongside Admiral Baby and All in the Family 1999. Of course, something that many people have questions about is why Lance Coffman's partner, Detective Homer Simpson, went from a virile and confident ladies' man to a Gomer Pyle-esque buffoon starting in the second episode. Why did this happen, what would have been the case if it hadn't occurred?

Perhaps it had something to do with the severe case of laryngitis that led to Homer's voice changing. Either that, or maybe he got a crayon shoved up his nose.

Believe me, it happened organically. And the original version of Police Cops was called Badge Control, but then it was decided that a show about high tech talking badges that shoot laser beams might not be quite realistic. And then they decided to focus on the people behind the badge -- police, cops, etc. Thus, Police Cops was born.

Personally, I think a timeline about Badge Patrol would be fascinating.

Also, have you heard that there's a real person named Homer Simpson, who made a big deal about the character? He was a fascinating character, and must have been some kind of genius. He grew up in an ordinary blue-collar family until his mother abandoned him to live in a Hippie Commune, and his father told him she was dead. But Simpson overcame adversity to grow up to be a renowned nuclear technician who saved his town multiple times, went to space, patented several inventions, briefly served as mayor, voiced Poochy the Dog on the Itchy and Scratchy Show, and I think he won a Grammy. And his kids are even more impressive. Have you ever heard of Sideshow Bob? Krusty the Klown's old sidekick who turned out to be a criminal mastermind? Well, who foiled Sideshow Bob's criminal plans five different times?! Bart and Lisa Simpson, ages 10 and 8. It's incredible!
