Suppose that Johnston is not wounded at seven pines. He had withdrawn toward Richmond, but then decided to go on the offensive. I think he would continue the offensive against McClellan, bit he would be a little less aggressive than Lee. Although Johnston does not retake as much territory, he would have far fewer casualties. So the line is at Williamsburg. What happens next?
Does Lee replace Johnston for the next campaign? Or does he get sent west. With Jackson to help him, I don't think Johnston will do too bad. But I don't think there will be a special order 191. And come December, the federals may get an even bloodier nose at Fredericksburg.
