Well, since it's been a long time since I proposed a POD, what about this.
John Tyler was the 10th president of the United States and the first not to be elected. Originally VP of William H. Harrison, he acceded to the presidency when the latter died just one month after his inauguration in 1841. Now, the fact a VP becomes a president if the president dies in office wasn't that clear back then since there was no precedent and the whole issue generated quite a ruckuss, to say the least. When you are called "Your Accidency" it's evident that there is people who don't like you in the White House. This bad beginning was followed by some more polemics as his presidency went on, making Tyler one of the most unpopular presidents ever, which culminated with the first impeachment attempt on a US president over corruption charges in 1843. The resolution, however, was defeated by 127 vs 83 votes.
Now take into account what happened after that resolution was defeated. Tyler saw his supporters gone and tried to form a new political party. To do so, he tried to court support by promoting the US annexation of Texas, which finally happened in 1845, and resulted in turn in the Mexican-American War now with his successor James Polk at the helm (Tyler having failed to secure enough support to run for reelection under a new party).
So what would have happened if Tyler had been impeached successfully in 1843 and forced to leave office?
