Ironically it was John Travolta who was initially cast to star in the Oscar winning 1982 Officer and a Gentleman. We all know Richard Gere got the role as well as an Oscar nomination.
John Travolta took a more action-oriented/comedy path in films like Broken Arrow, Face/Off, BeCool, Basic as well as 1994's Pulp Fiction - for which he did get a nomination.
Though one may wonder if he accepted that role in Officer and a Gentleman what impact if would have had on his career. That year's Blow Out he played a sound recorder didn't help him any.
On second thought picturing John Travolta sobbing in front of Louis Gossett - "I've got no where else to go". - Richard Gere nailed that part well...don't think Travolta would have done that part better....
