Not sure if this has been addressed before, but this is something I've been pondering.
John Stewart, Duke of Albany, was the only son of Alexander, Duke of Albany, brother to James III of Scotland. For most of his life he was directly in line for the throne and from 1516, was heir apparent for James V until his death in 1536.
My question is this, what consequences could there have been had he lived past 1536, and perhaps been alive when James V died in 1542, my estimate is that he'd serve as regent for any legitimate child James V had, and if he had had none, he would ascend the throne as King.
In that latter scenario, would he be John II? Or Robert IV?
Finally who might he marry?
