John of Gaunt

It means the would-be Henry IV is unlikely to return to England to take the throne from Richard II, as a start, meaning Richard will continue on the throne unchallenged.

Would it? I thought John of Gaunt's claims to Castile were strictly Jure Uxoris, and since Henry was his son by his first wife not by Constance of Castile would he have a claim to the Castilian throne? Wouldn't the throne pass to John's daughter Catherine? I assume she could easily marry someone else if John does take Castile (not being forced to make a bargain with John Trastamara) but I assume she, not Henry Bolingbroke, would be the heir in Castile.

I'm not sure what effects a Lancastrian Castile, albeit a short lived one, would have. But I imagine it would change the dynamics of Iberian politics since IIRC Castile was generally more pro-French up until then.

Well, Henry of Bolingbroke would thus have ties to Castile, Brittany and Navarre (through his second wife), not to mention the Plantagenet holdings in France. I'd start getting very, very nervous if I'm the French king.

This sounds interesting, could this lead to House Lancaster being an analogue/rival to House Hapsburg.

Though anything to see a united (if barely) W.Europe.

Ah, to see a timeline with Lancastrian W.Europe, Hapsburg C.Europe and Jagellion E.Europe.....

So do John of Gaunt and his second wife have the same number of children as the OTL? I could see Gaunt's chances of being crowned King in right of his wife if they have a son.

Also I wonder if John of Gaunt becoming King butterflies out some of the births of the Beauforts or them being legitimized.
