John McorMack a great President

It is possible that Oswald (or whoever) could have shot at Johnson, who was in the same motorcade I believe or that LBJ's heart could have given out in the shock.

As far as I can see he would have been sympathetic to Civil Rights and Great Society.

Maybe he might have done something less destructive about Vietnam

It is true he was old but in OTL he served as Speaker (a fairly demanding role I think) until 1971.

And a gentler treatment of Vietnam, for instance controlling the cities and the borders, and creating a embargo, would probably have had a large effect concerning America's global reputation in the years that follow. Interesting.

From what I've heard John McCormak was unlikely to run in 1964 if he had become President upon Johnson's death. If that's the case then making McCormak a great President is difficult, but perhaps not impossible. Let's say the Civil Rights Act passes while McCormak is President. McCormak is therefore perhaps the President most associated with Civil Rights, although more legislation on that front will be passed by his successor. (Humphrey?) and therefore he will be a well regarded President. If you can somehow get the VRA passed before January 20th 1965, McCormak seems even better, that would be a lot for a Presidency that lasts little more than a year to accomplish. Still even if it's only the CRA, McCormak's Presidency would probably have some deal of respect.
