John McCain dies in Vietnam

What if instead of surviving his plane crash John McCain died?

The current presidential campaign would no doubt be quite different. Probably Romney or Guliani versus Obama.

or whoever else was in 2nd place for the gop nom in 2000. likely steve forbes. who would have maybe a more decent chance in this election, come to think of it, for financial/economic reasons.

It might depend on how he dies. Is he killed instantly, or does he die as a result of some sort of beating?
As I recall, he broke three limbs in the crash, woke up being pummeled by villagers, and was then bayoneted twice upon his capture.

I'm not sure what direction that would be, but without his Nixon meeting, we are introducing butterflies into the highest level...

Hardly, he'll have another photo-op with another recently released POW. Nixon will pretty much go in the same direction as in OTL.
