John Lennon avoids a drug conviction in 1969

As most Beatles fans are aware, during the seventies John Lennon was faced with deportation ostensibly due to a drug conviction in England in 1969, but also because of the Nixon administrations distaste for Lennon's associations with leftists during the time period. Until 1975 the threat of deportation loomed over Lennon's head. But let's say that drug conviction never happens, for whatever reason. Without the 1969 conviction to the best of my knowledge there wouldn't be a legally established reason for him to be thrown out of the country. How is Lennon's life in the seventies different without a looming threat of being thrown out of the United States?
